Production culture of Polish domestic TV series between 1998 and 2012

The Polish TV market, as we know it today, started operating in 1997, when the two main commercial TV stations – Polsat and TVN – were established as a result of the licensing process. In the first years of activity, as completely new players on the Polish market, they both faced many challenges, such as a huge demand for programming to fill their schedules, non-existent production structures and the lack of specialized production personnel. Due to these market conditions, conducted between 2011 and 2013, in which producers and scriptwriters talk about their own working methods, going back in their recollections to the early years of TVN’s existence. Such a look at the production context and the creative processes in the commercial sector’s early years allows us to better understand how the Polish television market gained maturity throughout the years. The analysis of the industry context behind the significant increase in the number of Polish TV series encourages the reader to look at the popular Polish series in a new light.
