Jacques Lacan as a Theorist of Communication

The article is an introduction to Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalysis in the context of Communication and Media Studies. By presenting the concept of the three orders of subjective ontology (Real, Symbolic and Imaginary), the author reconstructs the understanding of communication inherent to the discussed theory and outlines the position of the French psychoanalyst in relation to social sciences. Regarding each of the presented Lacanian concepts, the author suggests further application of the discussed theory in research of media and social communication. The article ends with a review of the literature in the field of social sciences, where Lacanian psychoanalysis was used to study communication processes.
