Each of the pilgrimages of St. John Paul II to Poland became for Polish people the special event and occasion to the great liturgical celebrations, with both moral and social dimensions. In the 1980s, when the Church and Popes homeland itself survived a very difficult period, John Paul II used to strengthen the national spirit. Krakow as the "city of the Pope" had a special place in the hearts of the Polish people. In that decade John Paul II visited Krakow twice, in 1983 and in 1987. It was the place where he himself led the Church as her archbishop for 14 years. Therefore, he remained faithful to the same love towards his sheep. This paper is an attempt to develop the general panorama of the apostolic journeys of John Paul II to Poland in the 1980s, of their meaning and some liturgical particularities, seen especially from his beloved city – Krakow.
