The main objective of this paper is to present the issues related to the possible dangers connected with functioning social networking sites. In practice, public life provides many examples of intentional exploitation of this type of websites in order to manipulate mass awareness, especially during the period preceding election time. The intention of the author of this paper is to present disinformation (and even manipulative) methods and techniques to which the users of social networking sites, e.g. Facebook and Twitter, are exposed. Since we are witnessing an increase in citizens’ activity in the political area of the so-called user-generated content, drawing people’s attention to such things as twitter bombs, slacktivism or astroturfing is not only an interesting research question, but it may also significantly contribute to the network users’ awareness of security issues and the objectivity of information.
