Motivations of the users of the game “Pokemon Go!”. Analysis of the phenomenon on the basis of mini FGI

The game “Pokemon Go!” was established in 2016 and regularly generates more and more profits. It combines technologies closed in a smartphone, offering users gameplay using geolocation, augmented reality, the ability to interact with the real world and other players. The literature identifies seven main areas that motivate players to use “Pokemon Go!”. These are: physical activity, fun / pleasure, escapism, nostalgia, maintaining friendships, initiating friendships and achievements / development in the game space. The aim of the study is to divide the motivation of players depending on their level. The research method used was mini focus interviews, a qualitative research method described by J. Lisek-Michalska. The results of the study show differences, but also similarities, in the motivations of players defined as beginners and advanced. Players also show the reasons for their abandonment of the game and what would allow them to re-engage in active play during the COVID-19 pandemic.
