Female ideals in adolescent magazines – information transfer, persuasion or manipulation?

A number of glossy magazines for teenagers display a certain ideal of femininity which is deep-rooted in gender stereotypes. Namely, it is a young slim girl who is keen on fashion, cosmetics, shopping, boys and various pastimes. The paper shows some of the manipulation and persuasion techniques which are often used in adolescent magazines: especially they are visible in the choice of the content, in the way certain information is conveyed or in the editing of images i.e. photoshopping. Young readers are often not aware of the manipulation; therefore, they are not able to oppose it. As a result it causes a great problem for pedagogues to deal with.
