The aim of this study was to validate the thesis that media texts, which touch on the broadly defined theme of prison and living in prisons do not provide consumer information that would allow an entire, and above all, more multidimensional recognition of discussed fragment of reality. In view of the fact that journalists often focus on similar and, importantly, only selected aspects of the reality of prison, while disregarding other ones, the image of a closed world established by the recipient of these publications is far from that which functions in the consciousness of the criminals themselves. Hence media have impact on the perception of prison by the people who have never stayed there, but due to the fact that the said influence causes distorted picture of prison reality, it is hard to assess it positively.
